Over $130K worth of artwork seized from Natick psychiatrist convicted of fraud

A Natick psychiatrist who was found guilty of billing health insurers millions for services he never provided has been ordered to forfeit over $130,000 in artwork, according to court documents.

Gustavo Kinrys, 55, was convicted of seven counts of wire fraud, six counts of false statements relating to a health care matter and one count of obstructing a criminal health care investigation following a jury trial in October 2023, according to the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office. In June 2024, he was sentenced to more than eight years in prison and three years of supervised release.

The following month, a judge approved the government’s request to seize over $6.5 million worth of Kinrys’ property. His 0.93-acre property on Nantucket was seized later that year, as was his former home in Wellesley, according to court documents.

In March, Kinrys’ Nantucket vacation home was sold for $3.7 million, the Nantucket Current reported.

But according to court documents, the two properties did not satisfy the $6.5 million he owed the government. On July 1, 2026, a court approved a request to seize 24 artworks in his possession, including two by internationally beloved pop artist Romero Britto and one by renowned expressionist painter LeRoy Neiman.

The psychiatrist’s insurance fraud scheme

Kinrys was a licensed psychiatrist who practiced out of Natick, according to federal prosecutors. Between January 2015 and December 2018, he engaged in a variety of fraudulent billing schemes which netted him a total of $19 million in reimbursements for services he never provided.

Among the fraudulently billed services were 8,000 transcranial magnetic stimulation sessions (TMS) — a treatment used to treat conditions such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder — that Kinrys never provided, federal prosecutors said. The psychiatrist billed insurers on behalf of 74 patients, but none of them actually received a single session.

Kinrys also billed insurers for more than 900 psychotherapy sessions that never happened, federal prosecutors said. On 382 days, he billed insurers for more than 24 hours worth of psychotherapy. On one particular day, he claimed to have provided 70 hours worth of sessions.

During Kinrys’ purported psychotherapy and TMS sessions, he was actually vacationing in locations such as the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and the Czech Republic, according to federal prosecutors. In addition to using the proceeds from the fraud to pay off his $1.8 million Wellesley home and the Nantucket property, he bought more than $600,000 in jewelry from luxury brands like Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

When Medicare and other insurers sought records from Kinrys to back up his claims, he tried to conceal the fraud, and in one instance forced an employee to create fake patient records, according to federal prosecutors. Later, in response to a subpoena from the Office of the Inspector General, he created additional false patient records and submitted them to investigators.

Kinrys was indicted in the case in December 2020.
